Academic Unit of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AUICAP)

About us

Professor Valsamma Eapen heads the Academic Unit of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry operating through the School of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Sydney South West Area Health Service. There are a number of research projects being conducted in a number of childhood disorders including Tourette Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anxiety and Depression.

Specific research projects include:

  • Perinatal anxiety and depression
  • Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder and its impact on maternal and infant outcomes
  • Mental health morbidity in adolescents
  • Metabolic syndrome and related side effects of second generation antipsychotics

The Academic Unit of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has a new Autism Hub (link to Autism Hub section) that is part of the Autism Cooperative Research Centre (CRC), the world’s first national, cooperative research effort focused on Autism Spectrum Disorder.
