$18m for research into dementia, mood disorders - UNSW Newsroom (15 Dec 2011)

Research into early onset dementia and efforts to develop treatments for depression and bipolar disorder have been given a major boost, with UNSW researchers receiving more than $18 million in the latest round of federal government health funding.

UNSW’s second program grant – $7 million over five years – went to a team working to improve knowledge and management of depression and bipolar disorder.

Program leader Professor Philip Mitchell, who is based at UNSW’s School of Psychiatry and the Black Dog Institute, said better understanding of the mood disorders would lead to more effective personalised therapies.

Dogs with dementia could aid Alzheimer's fight - The Age (27 Nov 2011)

New Chair of Forensic Mental Health - UNSW News (15 Nov 2011)

Associate Professor Kimberlie Dean has been appointed the inaugural Chair of Forensic Mental Health at UNSW.

The Chair - a first for the University and only the second appointment of its kind in Australia - has been established through a long-standing partnership between UNSW and Justice Health.

Australian researchers will for the first time harness e-technology to develop a customised internet program to identify and arm healthy young people most at risk of depression before the disorder takes hold.

University of New South Wales researcher Dr Alex Wilde has received a $200,000 grant from beyondblue to develop the innovative web-based tool which will focus on preventing depression by building resilience.
